The Difference is in the Design

Online Learning

Online learning is one of the hottest trends in the training and development field today. It's also one of the most hotly debated methods for delivering learning. Proponents like the accessibility, convenience and interactivity of online learning. Opponents of online learning complain about the lack of face-to-face contact with students, unreliable delivery and administrative issues.

A recent online event highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of delivering online learning. The Masie Center sponsored a satellite and internet broadcast called TechLearn LIVE on March 17. The two-hour streaming video broadcast was sent to reception sites around the world.

Since satellite technology is still beyond the financial means of many organizations, the internet broadcast enabled individuals and groups with limited resources to take part in the learning experience. Anyone with a computer, a browser, internet service and a free video plug-in could participate on a desktop or in a classroom.  For interactivity, participants were invited to send e-mail or faxes with questions or comments during the broadcast.

According to TechLearn Trends, an online newsletter published by The Masie Center, some internet sites experienced delays and reception problems related to systems and hardware.  Using the internet to deliver online learning isn't perfect, but it provides broader access to information, encourages the exchange of ideas and increases knowledge.
